Masjid Sultan Mahmud Riayat Syah is one of the most magnificent and important mosque landmarks in Batam, located on Jalan Brigjen Katamso, Tanjung Uncang, Batu Aji District, Batam. Built between 2017 and 2019 under the initiative of the Batam City Government, the mosque has become a prominent religious and cultural tourism destination for both local residents and international visitors. Named after Sultan Mahmud Riayat Syah, a significant historical figure of the Riau-Lingga Sultanate, the mosque features grand architecture that blends Malay, Arab, and Turkish design elements. It stands on more than 4 hectares of land, with a building area of approximately 57,144 square meters, capable of accommodating tens of thousands of worshippers at once—making it one of the largest mosques in Sumatra. One of its most striking features is the 99-meter-tall main tower, symbolizing the 99 Asmaul Husna (the Beautiful Names of Allah). The tower is equipped with an elevator and an observation point that offers panoramic views of Batam from above. Additional facilities include a large central dome, spacious parking areas, and giant membrane umbrellas inspired by those at the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah—designed to enhance comfort for worshippers and visitors. Today, the mosque serves as a central hub for major congregational prayers such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, religious lectures, and Islamic events.
